Everything you wanted to know about Expose to the Right.

I find ETTR very useful when I am faced with scenes of wide dynamic range with very bright and dark areas.
ETTR is a photographic technique with which you can get the most out of the Dynamic Range of the camera avoiding the appearance of noise in the shadow areas of our images and banding.
In this full-day workshop, you will learn a technique that will help you to deal with difficult light situations and get amazing landscapes photography.

Sierra Photo NYC:
Talk. October 23, 2019.
“The Creative Control of Natural Light”.
Levels: all levels.
Taken from its Greek roots,“photography” literally means “drawing with light”. Among the biggest challenges for nature photographers is capturing natural light while conveying a sense of personal experience of a place. Because the most beautiful natural light is unpredictable, unique light situations create perfect but fleeting, opportunities to take mesmerizing and meaningful photographs. A photographer demonstrates mastery and creates his/her most impactful work with the intuitive knowledge of how a tight range of settings can be used to capture the essence of light. We must plan, prepare, and predict what we need to capture this “perfect light”.

Princeton Photo Workshops:
Workshop. Saturday, October 26, 2019. 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
“Landscape / Cityscape in Black and White”
$ 319
Level: all levels.
Learning the fundamental skills to make a Black and White image allows photographers to create some of the most stunning and imaginative images in their portfolios. While colors can be used to balance the composition in color photography, many of those colors result in the same shade of gray in black & white. The absence of color brings the viewer’s attention to the light and shadows in forms and textures; the photographer must focus on composition and see the scene creatively to make a successful B&W image. Sunrise/sunset demonstrates the dichotomy: while the golden lights of a reddish sunrise or sunset aren’t useful in B&W photography, the shadows produced by the low angle light of the sun and the backlighting that we can achieve at these moments make for captivating images in B&W. In both Landscape and Cityscape, B&W photography demands that we explore textures, shapes, shadows, and illuminations, which evolve throughout the day as the light changes. Even hard lights with shadows, geometric shapes, and sharp edges make for beautiful compositions of high contrast.
Photographers today have the option of editing the same photograph in color or B&W. While masters like Adams perfected their work in the darkroom using techniques of dodging and burning, the digital photographer’s success comes from learning how to use continually evolving software tools to achieve powerful visual results.
During our workshop, we’ll learn the basics of B&W digital photography, explore how to see the possibilities in a color image we plan to convert to a B&W image and discuss camera settings and composition to achieve best results. We will spend a few hours shooting and work with Adobe Lightroom* and Silver Efex Pro* to convert our standard pictures into successful B&W images. You will leave this full-day workshop with inspiring new insights and skills to create memorable B&W images.

B&H Event Space:
Talk. October 25, 2019. 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm
“Black and White Travel Photography”.
Levels: all levels.
B&W demands from the photographer more attention in the composition and more creativity. In color photography, the different colors can balance a composition, but in B&W many of those colors will have the same shade of gray. That’s why forms and textures are so important when you need to differentiate objects in an image. Not always color photography looks attractive in B&W.
